Dorcus Inzikuru close to full fitness

Norman Katende E-mail Print PDF
LIKE the biblical Samson, Dorcus Inzikuru says she is suddenly regaining the energy that made her the best 3000m steeplechase runner in the world three years back.
After two years struggling to get back her rythm after giving birth, Inzikuru is back to her best physically, and is confident of a return to the international circuit in the next two months.
She starts her comeback by returning to Kampala tomorrow to compete at the Akii Bua memorial meet at Mandela stadium, Namboole.
The Commonwealth and former World champion –– who has reduced her weight from 68kg to just 45kg –– is confident she will be able to make it to Berlin for the World championships in August.
“I am back for good. I have been going over the hurdles but I will start my serious competition at Namboole. I will start by competing in the 800m event,” she promised.
“What I want now is to gauge my speed before I travel to Europe next month.
“It was only after my baby (Emmanuelle Munguki) stopped breastfeeding that I concentrated on training. There is nothing impossible if you believe and trust God,” she said.
Training with her Italian coach Renato Canova, she runs 25km daily. “ I have a simple target of running below 9 minutes 15 seconds this season in the 3000m steeplechase,” she noted.
